US OPEN
We have our golfing guru Kevin Officer back in the hot-seat this week to give us his US Open insight and where we should put our money this weekend...
Today sees the start of the second golf major of 2008, the US Open.
It’s being held this year at the beautiful Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego. The organisers this year have really spiced things up, fixing the draw so the top three players in the world – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson and Australian Adam Scott – have been paired together for today’s opening round three-ball. It is expected to be an extremely tough test for the best players in the world.
Tiger Woods returns to the fray and this is the World Number One’s first tournament in over two months since undergoing knee surgery and he has not played a full round of golf since, so four rounds of golf on this demanding course may take its toll on Woods.
Despite all of this he is still the hot favourite and is 3/1 in places to win his 14th Major, which would put him just four away from the great Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 majors. Woods has won on this course a remarkable six times before so as the old saying goes, “Beware of the injured Tiger.”
The course measures 7,643 yards, the longest US Open course in history.
Canny organisers have also fixed the draw so as the great English young guns of Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter all play together.
Defending champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina has been grouped with British Open champion Padraig Harrington and Davis Love III for the opening two rounds, while Vijay Singh, Stewart Cink and Spaniard Sergio Garcia will be together in the first round.
Garcia claimed the prestigious Players Championship last month but no European golfer has won the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
One of our each-way tips is Robert Karlsson of Sweden who is the best golfer in Europe at the moment. Karlsson is overpriced at 66/1, but a better bet must be for Karlsson to be the top European golfer at 18/1.
The stats are there to back it up, with the Swede finishing in the top five in his last four tournaments on the European tour.
So who are we tipping to win?, that’s the question?
After we tipped Stewart Cink at 80/1 in the first Major of the year, the US Masters, every man and his dog on the road piled on him each-way, which paid 1/4 the odds, so again we have gone for a good each-way bet.
American Justin Leonard is priced at 66/1 at the moment, over-the-top odds for the in-form player of the past few weeks. Leonard won last week on the US Tour and his game is hotting up just in time for the Ryder Cup later in the year. Phil Mickleson is also playing well at the moment and has two wins in the past six weeks. He is best priced at 10/1.
US Open Bets: Phil Mickleson 10/1, Justin Leonard 66/1 (e/w), Robert Karlson 66/1 (e/w), Karlsson also to be top European 18/1.
